📖 The myth of Butes on stage

The piece explores the story of Butes, the sole Argonaut from Jason's voyage who chose not to shield himself from the sirens and jumped into the sea. Taking center stage, this mythological figure embodies the struggle between reason and desire, civilization and the wild, questioning human boundaries and renunciations.

A cast of six performers drives this large-scale choreography where the body serves as living matter and plastic expression. The production moves from the collective bond aboard the ship Argo to the rupture caused by individual departure, leaving dynamic physical traces in the performance space.

Awarded the 2026 Max Award for Best Male Dance Performer, Juan Berlanga created this project as artist-in-residence at Centro Danza Matadero for the 2026 season, blending traditional roots with current choreographic languages.
