📖 What to expect

One day, Gyeonghe receives a message from her friend Inseon, who lives on Jeju Island in South Korea: she has been injured chopping wood, has been taken to the mainland and had to leave behind a bird that may starve.

In her novel, Han Kang explores one of the darkest episodes in South Korean history, the crushing of the 1948 Jeju uprising. Deflorian examines and questions this unsettling text.
