Directions

He was Dürer's most ambitious apprentice and probably ran his workshop during the master's second trip to Italy. From those years he kept the nickname «Grien», German for green. The Prado devotes an exhibition to Hans Baldung Grien (1484/85-1545), one of the central figures of the German Renaissance. 🎨🌿

The starting point is the museum's own pair of panels, recently restored.

🖼️ The exhibition

«Harmony» (or «The Three Graces») and «The Ages and Death» are among his last works, from around 1541-1544. They entered Philip II's collection as a diptych: on one side an ideal vision of beauty, on the other the ages of life marching through a wintry landscape that recalls a Bosch hell. Restoration has revealed botanical details and the difference in tone between the two panels.

The show places Baldung between Dürer and Cranach and includes a section on what was found while cleaning the works. Curated by Christine Seidel, head of Flemish and Northern Schools painting.
