📖 The avant-garde legacy of Antonia Mercé
The show revives the artistic heritage of Antonia Mercé, La Argentina, a key innovator of 20th-century Spanish dance, revisiting the repertoire she presented in Paris in 1929 with her Ballets Espagnols, blending Spanish dance tradition with avant-garde artistic currents.
The production recalls two core pieces premiered that year: Juerga, by Julián Bautista, and Triana, by Isaac Albéniz, alongside other historical choreographies that highlight an open conception of dance in dialogue with contemporary music and visual arts.
🏛️ A major performing arts alliance
This work is a co-production of Teatro de la Zarzuela, Fundación Juan March, Palau de les Arts de Valencia, Teatro de la Maestranza de Sevilla, Auditorio de Tenerife, and the International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada, with the collaboration of the Ballet Nacional de España.
Through this collaborative project, the stage rediscovers the artistic power and international reach of an indispensable Spanish dance pioneer.
