Manolo Millares was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on 17 February 1926, an Ash Wednesday. A hundred years later, the Reina Sofía remembers one of the great Informalist painters with a single work. 🖤🧵

It is «Personaje caído I» (Fallen Figure I, 1970), mixed media on burlap, in the Single Piece room.

🖼️ The exhibition

As a child he was fascinated by his great-grandfather's books on Canary Islands history and by visits to the Museo Canario, where he discovered the signs on pintaderas and the Guanche mummies. That memory of the islands' original peoples runs through his stitched, burnt and torn burlap pieces.

Single Piece is a room devoted to showing one work from the collection, to be looked at slowly, outside the permanent route.

🏛️ Planning your visit

Entry is free on Mondays and Wednesday to Saturday from 7 to 9 pm, and on Sundays from 12.30 to 2.30 pm, for individual visitors only. If you already have a ticket, the museum recommends entering through the Nouvel building (Ronda de Atocha, 2).

ℹ️ Good to know: Closed on 24, 25 and 31 December and on 1 and 6 January.

✨ A hundred years of Millares, in a single burlap.
