📖 The birth of an architectural icon
In the mid-19th century, the old postal offices in Puerta del Sol collapsed under the strain of Madrid's rapid urban growth. In 1904, the Spanish state held a public competition on the grounds of the former Buen Retiro gardens at Emilio Castelar Square (now Cibeles) to group all postal and telegraph services together.
Young architects Antonio Palacios and Joaquín Otamendi won the contest, creating an imposing headquarters envisioned as a vibrant crossroads of public activity, communication, and civic life.
🏛️ CentroCentro and the exhibition
